          President's Message

          Picture

          Greetings:
Welcome to the Utah Association of Family and Consumer Sciences website!  It is with great pleasure that I greet you as President of UAFCS this year!  As an affiliate of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences, we are joining with FCS professionals from around the nation.  By joining forces with professionals in other states, we have a stronger voice that can be used to advocate for our programs in education, Cooperative Extension, and business and industry!

Each of us has a story to tell about how we became students and professionals in Family and Consumer Sciences!  Who inspired you?  I encourage you to share your story with others!  It is through these stories that we can encourage students to become FCS professionals, FCS professionals to become members of UAFCS, and stakeholders to support all of the hard work done to improve the quality of life for individuals, families, and communities!  I am thankful for those who have spent numerous hours teaching, advocating, writing, and much more to keep our profession alive and well!  What are we going to do next?  It is essential for us to consider our membership in professional organizations and how we can use it to continue to pave the way for future professionals in FCS.

Let's spend the year continuing to tell the story of Family and Consumer Sciences!  Reach out and recruit a new member, student, and advocate and you could develop a new friendship, mentoring relationship, or find a new supporter of Family and Consumer Sciences!  As Margaret Mead once said "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world.  Indeed it is the only thing that ever has."

So, let's join together and continue to make a difference for our profession!  In the beginning there was one voice (Ellen Swallow Richards), now there are many voices... How are you going to use your voice for the future?

          Best,

          Lindsey Shirley, PhD
